THE FIRST CONVERTIBLE CORVETTE TO WEAR CHEVY’S ZR1 BADGE SINCE REAGAN WAS IN OFFICE, THIS 212 MPH BURNER IS DROP TOP AMAZING

BY EVAN MONROE

Audience members were still rubbing eyes in late November of last year just weeks after Chevrolet released its new Corvette ZR1 coupe at the Dubai auto show (its most powerful Vette ever, and to us most incredible looking in the line’s recent history) when an announcement was made that a convertible version would also be available. The first drop top to earn a ZR1 badge in 30 years, it shares the coupe’s 755 hp, 6.2 liter supercharged V 8, but is slightly heavier, owing to structural reinforcements necessary to keep any convertible from rattling apart. Not that you’d notice the heft, or likely care if you did. Available in a seven speed manual or eight speed automatic transmission, the ZR1 is essentially a more road friendly version of the track dedicated Z06, and is capable of a top speed of 212 mph and a 0 to 60 time of less than three seconds.

“The ZR1 convertible is simply a no compromise supercar,” said Corvette Executive Chief Engineer Tadge Juechter. “Thanks to the strong structure, the suspension tuning between coupe and convertible models is identical, meaning the convertible offers the same benchmark performance.”

The only extras to be concerned with are within the $2,995 ZTK Performance Package, which includes an adjustable rear wing (950 pounds of down force fully deployed), a front splitter with carbon fiber end caps, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, and some chassis and Magnetic Ride Control tuning. Designed to help generate faster lap times via maximum grip in the corners, the package is fun, but with a car this amazing looking, we think the wing is a bit of an overstatement.

Exhaust can be tuned to make statements from “never mind me” to “hell yeah!”, thanks to four modes and corresponding sound levels: Stealth, Tour, Sport, and Track. In Stealth mode, the ZR1 is quieter than the Corvette Z06, though in Track setting it is significantly louder.
The ZR1 coupe starts at $119,995, and the convertible rings in at $123,995 and up.
