A small landscaping business gives rise to the perfect home.
For many people, the American Dream holds the promise of countless opportunities and endless possibilities. The Basso family is a notable example of a family working towards that very dream. Starting out with a small landscaping business many years ago, they envisioned one day that the business would grow to become a successful company and they could reap the rewards of building a prosperous life for their family. Of course, the dream would be even sweeter if they could eventually build their dream home. With hard work and dedication their dream became a reality with the help of Annemarie Ruta of Elegant Interior Designs, Inc. “Upon meeting this family, I felt an immediate connection to Sabrina Basso,” said Ruta. “It’s always a pleasure to meet warm people who truly appreciate their many blessings and continue to have such strong work ethics. The Basso family deserves this magnificent home and they take great pride in calling it home.”
Situated on a parcel facing a golf course, the exterior of the brick home features wrought iron entry gates and conjures an estate-like appeal. The magnificent landscaping and abundance of flowers goes beyond expectation even for one of the top landscapers on the island. The backyard is a resort-like paradise which presents itself as a luxury getaway. The space features an in-ground pool, waterfalls, a raised covered porch and multiple seating areas. Entertaining is important for this family and having the luxury to entertain al fresco despite unfavorable weather is a great advantage. The vibe is sleek and cosmopolitian with a touch of South Beach; you truly do not feel as if you are in Staten Island.
The grand entry foyer is quite large yet welcoming, and a finely appointed crystal chandelier sets the stage. Damask wall coverings were inserted inside decorative picture frame moldings for a formal appearance. The living room is elegantly furnished with supple materials, silk fabrics, and ample seating for gatherings large or small. Gleaming marble and high polished wood flooring abound in the home, and the dining room is no exception. Traditional furniture and lighting set the tone for the room. Large tapestries, both framed and displayed on rods adorn the walls.
As in many homes, the main focus of this residence is on the kitchen and family room. “The kitchen and family room, no matter what size or how simple or grand are the two most popular rooms in a home today,” said Ruta. “The importance—from both the homeowner and decorators standpoint—is for the rooms to be both highly functional and aesthetically pleasing.” The family room is comfortable and relaxed in its décor; family portraits and photos frames are proudly displayed throughout and serve as a commentary to the closeness and strong family bonds of this special family.
An oversized kitchen with maple wood cabinetry offers every possible amenity for a chef. An interesting and noteworthy feature of this home is a second working kitchen situated adjacent to the large formal kitchen. Mrs. Basso is a passionate cook and required two commercial style kitchens to accommodate the needs of her large family and extensive menus.
The second floor has a large foyer with seating and ornate crown molding. Each of the bedrooms is accessible from this area. Their teenage daughter’s room is fun and trendy, with a hot pink and black-and-white color scheme. “She had a definite vision for her own room, and I really like when children get involved in planning their own space,” said Ruta. “It helps to identify their unique personalities and I enjoy portraying that in the décor of their rooms.” The son’s room is masculine and streamlined, featuring rich deep tones giving us a glimpse into his personality and individuality. The huge master suite has a detailed fireplace and two large sitting areas to relax in. Again, magnificent crown molding adds the a finishing detail to this luxurious retreat.
Each of the family members had an idea for how the recreational space on the lower level should be enjoyed. It was a win-win compromise because the large space was capable of being easily divided and utilized appropriately. “Sabrina wanted a more contemporary feel and it was fun selecting funky items and having a chance to be a little bit out of the box from a creative stand point as compared to the traditional feel of the rest of the home,” explained Ruta. The structural columns are wrapped in glass mosaic tiles and the ceiling has trendy pattern wallpaper. The wall paint is a metallic sheer blue and chocolate brown done with a stripling effect. The lounge area has comfortable leather seating and a floating cushion chair. There is a game room area, a gym with rubber matting, a card table, area and an office. This multifunctional recreational space offers something for everyone.
The ability to dream comes quite naturally to most, yet it is the ability to turn those dreams into reality that sets the bar much higher. Bravo to the Basso family for job well done!
