THE ICONIC 1970s ROYAL OAK CHRONOGRAPH IS REIMAGINED FOR A NEW AGE

BY GENA ANSELL LANDE

Audemars Piguet rewrote the rules of late 20th-century fine watchmaking when it released the Royal Oak in 1972 the first luxury sports watch honed from steel. With its octagonal bezel, tapisserie patterned dial, and integrated bracelet, it upended prevailing design codes and almost instantly became a modern icon. This year, the maker has teamed up with Soho luxury retailer Material Good to present an innovated skeletonized creation featuring a tourbillion and chronograph complications. The Royal Oak Tourbillon Chronograph Squelette, available in rose gold or titanium and water resistant up to 60 feet, is powered by the open worked manufacture calibre 2936 movement and features a glare-proof sapphire crystal case and back. The grey ruthenium-toned dial presents counters, pink-gold hour markers, and signature Royal Oak hands in luminescent coating. The case is a robust 44mm, and there’s also a 72-hour power reserve on board.
