Cutting hair is an art, but personality, career, lifestyle, and of course, current trends are factors in deciding the best choice for a new cut, and a consultation with a trusted hair stylist is the key to a successful outcome.

During that consultation, it’s critical to communicate any desired look you are going for, and a photo of the ideal cut and style inevitably helps the process (and by all means, ask for credentials and/or any training or certifications your hair pro may have). The stylist should then determine if the customer’s hair length and condition will allow for the look. It’s up to him or her, then, to be honest and recognize the attributes that factor into making a great haircut, such as hair texture and the direction of its movement.

Most would, of course, love nothing more than to achieve a “wash and go” style but it’s often not that simple. I like to customize every haircut for each person. You simply cannot, for example, cut without texturising, because all hair and head shapes are not the same. We aim to create an illusion of an oval face shape, which is considered the ideal image, and to achieve this, some clients require bulk in certain areas, others don’t. As hair dries, it is easier for us to see that difference and to customize, so the process typically is a pre-design cut after wetting the hair, then finishing the cut once it’s dry. Doing so gives a stylist the opportunity to see how the hair is actually falling when styled.

Eyes, touch, expertise, tools, and passion is central to the craft. Creating the perfect finished look is as important as the actual haircut itself, so, finding complementary hair products according to hair type is the final stage to finishing the style and achieving the right result.

So what’s the hot look this season? The textured, collarbone-length bob is definitely in. Ask your stylist to keep some sharp pieces to frame the face and if you’re daring, throw in a fringe, too. Style the bob with a carefree, messy wave to get a tousled look. Remember, polished and neat is out; instead, bring on the lived-in style for a fun, summery look.
