TAKE A STROLL DOWN MEMORY LANE WITH THIS RECONCEPTUALIZED PONG ARCADE GAME

BY MATT MIZRACH

Released by Atari in 1972, Pong, its name referencing the popular sport that shares half its name, is one of the earliest and most influential video games. The first commercially successful arcade console, it sparked an arms race among game designers that spawned an entire industry. (Today, the global video game market is valued at over $93 billion.) Created by Allen Alcorn, Pong was initially intended by Atari brass to be a training exercise, and now has a place in the Smithsonian Institution.

Its iconic design has been brought to new life by computer graphics guru Daniel Perdomo. Requiring two years of development, the final product utilizes hidden magnets and square mechanical paddles to send a squared ball zipping back and forth along the surface during gameplay effectively simulating the original game. Scoring and game markers are illuminated via LED displays (there are USB chargers on board, too), and the ends are foldable, so it can double as a coffee table. It just began shipping in September.
