THIS $350,000 ESCALADE COMBINES RIFLE ROUND PROOF CARBON COMPOSITE BODY ARMOR WITH AN INTERIOR THAT PUTS TYPICAL LIMO AMENITIES TO SHAME

BY EVAN MONROE

The armored car was actually envisioned by the tireless mind of Leonardo da Vinci, and steel plated military cars have been in production since before World War I, but armored civilian vehicles have a murkier history. Owners were certainly modifying cars in this manner as early as the last years of the 19th century, but the first truly modern civilian example was Al Capone’s 1928 Cadillac Model 341, which featured bulletproof glass almost an inch thick and steel plating in the door panels. Innovation has continued ever since its culmination perhaps in the United States presidential limousine, a modified Cadillac CT6 known as “The Beast.” Exact capabilities of the 15,000 to 20,000 pound limo are unknown, but certainly include the ability to repel a missile attack, along with mine resistance and an ambush protected hull.

For non-government employee lovers of both Cadillacs and security, there’s this $350,000 Escalade, with modifications performed by AddArmor, a Jackson, Wyoming based company (other locations in Utah, Mexico, South Africa, Kuwait, Dubai, and The Philippines) that forties various makes and models of cars and trucks, as well as vehicles like buses and trains, while maintaining their original appearance and performance. For starters, the Caddy features European B6 level armor, which can withstand 7.62 mm, 30 06, and .556 caliber bullets. Its multi layered polycarbonate and leaded glass can hold its own against 9 mm and .44 Magnum rounds. AddArmor’s carbon composite panels are, the company claims, not only 10 times stronger than ballistic steel, but weigh 60 percent less. The Escalade is also supplied with a beefed up suspension and larger brakes. Options include a sound cannon, anti-jamming communications, mine/explosion detection, and a global 911 phone system.

And sure, being protected is nice, but it’s also helpful to be reminded of what you’re living for. So, the interior is outfitted with, among other luxuries, a 32 inch HDTV and sumptuous custom leather upholstery.
