RAVISHING RUBIES JOIN FORCES WITH DIAMONDS IN A SET THAT TOPS OUR WISH LIST

BY ARCHANA AITHAL ROSE

Since opening its doors in 1977, Cellini jewelers, on Manhattan’s Park Avenue, has pushed the boundaries of craftsmanship and unique aesthetics perhaps never as beautifully as in this ruby and diamond set. It’s comprised of a two row diamond outlined V necklace with oval Burmese rubies and marquis shaped ruby drop earrings (rubies weigh 107.40 carats, while the white diamonds weigh 54.60 carats).

Although traditionally characterized by the color red, rubies are known to occur in many different shades, but the most sought after are in a rich hue referred to as “pigeon blood,” a term coined by Burmese gem dealers over the past two millennia to describe a shade occurring in the center of the red spectrum. As an age old observation goes, “asking to see the Pigeon’s Blood is like asking to see the face of God.” It’s a bit of hyperbole, to be sure, but not too far from the truth.

Cellini’s search, over a span of six years, resulted in a total of 243 perfectly matched pigeon blood Burmese rubies to produce pieces of extraordinary color and beauty.
