THIS CONSIDERABLY SIZED YET SURPRISINGLY INTIMATE CENTER HALL COLONIAL RECALLS PRINCE’S BAY’S 19TH CENTURY MANSION HOMES WHILE MARKING ITS ONGOING REVITALIZATION

BY TIA KIM

Staten Island’s Prince’s Bay, first read as “Princess Bay” on a 1776 map, might not have the same literal or price point altitude as a neighborhood like Todt Hill, but to us is possessed of history, character, and storytelling that is without parallel in the borough. Established as a fishing village in the middle decades of the 18th century, its oysters were nothing less than world famous, appearing regularly in the finest restaurants in Manhattan and shipped to locations in London and Paris. Like more than a few locations on the South Shore, Prince’s Bay was a popular location for homes for Manhattan residents eager to escape city heat and hustle, many of them manorial in size (the most famous the sprawling Greek Revival Seguine Mansion one of the few surviving examples of 19th century architecture on Staten Island). Both residential exclusivity and the area’s fishing vitality waned as pollution gathered in shore waters in the middle decades of the 20th century, but a massive cleanup effort has revitalize much of them, and today the neighborhood is experiencing a building boom, particularly with respect to larger homes.
