The legendary Ford GT gets completely redesigned for 2017

For all its potential branding zest, there actually are no agreed-upon criteria that define the term “supercar.” Other than general extremities of style, performance, and presentation, we, the consumers, are left to define the meaning. With its Lamborghinis, Maseratis, Ferraris, and Koenigseggs, et al., Europe unquestionably has the largest supercar sales footprint, but there are actually some makers—most sadly unknown or undersung—that make their high-performance dreams into steel right here in the U.S. The Roisson Q1 (kit car, $100,000), Mosler MT900s ($200,000), SSC Ultimate Aero ($670,000), and Hennessey Venom GT ($1.2 million) are some standouts in the class, joining larger-production counterparts like the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 ($80,000) and Dodge Viper GTS ($110,000).

Where niche market supercar maker meets regular production capacity best, perhaps, in the Ford GT. Though the model conjures memories of Ford’s GT40 racing cars the 1960s, the GT as we roughly know it today was rolled out during the 2005 to 2006 production year, and in the 2017 model undergoes only its second complete redesign. Powered by a twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V-6 producing just over 600 hp, “the GT will exhibit one of the best power-to-weight ratios of any production car,” according to Ford.

Not surprisingly, the $500,000 GT has a great deal of componentry plucked from Ford’s racing program, including a carbon fiber monococque and an aluminum subframe covered in carbon fiber body panels. Its dihedral doors combine even more racing heritage with inarguable cool, and a further tip of the high-tech hat is the new Gorilla Glass windshield (of the type drivers might recognize from smartphones). Maximum speed will likely be just over 200 mph, with approximate
0-to-60 times in the 3.2 second range.

Sadly, only 250 examples will be made available, though rumor is Ford (and Canadian manufacturing partner for the GT, the race shop and engineering firm Multimatic) might budge on this figure.
