The master at dressing a woman for wherever the evening hours take her, J. Loren now delivers wildlife elementals for fall/winter

by Sarah dE Brun

We all have that certain designer we run to for each designated occasion—what works for office attire, which label makes your favorite weekend styles, where to go for everyday basics, etc.. When it comes time to dress up, J. Loren makes it very clear that the brand wants to be your direct go-to. “We Run the Night,” the fashion house’s motto, is a direct reflection of the styles first created by its founding designer, former stylist Jason Loren Scott.

Loren Scott began designing at an early age and though he attended FIT, is mostly self-taught. His ability to hand-bead and stone corsets enabled him to create gowns for friends—a gift he describes as “art of impression.” As he grew into the industry, the early slings against his capsule collection of six pieces (sans zippers, buttons, or any way to get into the garment, for that matter) faded behind him. He learned, adapted, and moved on

He now designs for the woman who is strong, sultry, and sexy, one who loves art and embraces all things eclectic. She is not only in tune with herself, but harmonizes with the world and spirituality, something Loren Scott can relate to. From whom does he draw inspiration? Couture designs from Alexander McQueen, John Galliano, and Balenciaga’s Alexander Wang have an effect on his creative process, but for the Fall/Winter 2015’s collection “A Tribe Called J. Loren,” influence came from a place close to home: “The orange in the sunset, the green from the leaves that fall over my porch,” he described. These two standout colors stand boldly against the tribal prints that make up each look. Thigh-grazing hems, extreme structure, body hugging silhouettes, and shine (oh, that shine!) reflect a brave attitude, one the J. Loren woman bears, too.

Loren Scott’s vision comes from a place of restless and unpredictable reinvention, and his execution is fearless. “Honestly, I’m such an adventurous designer that I couldn’t stay true to one silhouette. I have tried different concepts each season. It’s fun to push fashion to a new level.” To keep the eye refreshed each season, he finds a way to recreate something so simple. “The pant is a pant, but can be so many different things. I love to explore that aspect. I love to experiment with my fabrics each season…new textiles, prints and skins.”

His advice to future designers is almost a testament to his success. “You are going to need the strength and endurance of an ox and the patience of a monk,” he offered. “Always keep your ears to the industry. Most importantly, know your industry in and out. This can make or break your brand. Also, stay humble; it will open so many doors for you.”

Words to live by in more ways than one and guidance that shows Loren Scott is running more than the night, he’s creating the future before him.
