pocket squares, tie bars, and other glories of detail accentuation

by Michael and Matt Duru

After spending 30-plus years in the fashion industry, in particular men’s fashion, I have come to learn that the devil really is in the details. I have seen trends come and go, from the pleated pant to the no-sock look to the reclaimed male romper. The irony is that all trends pass, of course.

So what can you do to make sure your clothing works as an asset? Part of the answer is focusing on details. Make sure there is a dimple in your tie, for example, keep it from flapping in the wind with a tie bar, and don’t forget the pocket square (if there’s ever a question as to what color square to pair with, go for solid white Irish linen).

Allow these details a role in defining your personal style. Also consider adding a lapel pin to your sports coat, and/or, instead of choosing a custom monogram out of a book like a skull at a tattoo parlor, have your signature digitized and embroidered on the cuff of all your shirts. You can also select colorful buttons, contrast stitching, or even a custom belt to match those new oxblood shoes. Focus on fit first, and then let details like these accentuate your unique style!
