PORSCHE’S LEGENDARY ROADSTER IS MARKING SIX DECADES OF THRILLS WITH THE FASTEST ITERATION YET, UNDERPINNED BY A FIRST EVER HYBRID POWERTRAIN

BY ERIK SCHONING

Porsche’s iconic sportscar turned 60 years old last year, but you wouldn’t know it from looking at the 2025 911 Carrera GTS coupe. In fact, this year’s Carrera is slated to be the fastest 911 yet, thanks to advancements in engine technology and the 911’s first-ever hybrid powertrain.

Under the hood is an updated version of Porsche’s 3.0L twin-turbo boxer engine, giving the Carrera GTS a whopping top track speed of 194 mph and a nimble touch on the accelerator; the speedster can rocket from 0 to 60 in 2.9 seconds, which slams its previous time by 0.3 seconds. This is all thanks to its unique T-Hybrid powertrain, which beefs up the 2025 variant. There’s also a new, strengthened eight-speed dual clutch transmission with an integrated, permanently excited synchronous motor that feeds supplementary power to the boxer engine. Power is further enhanced by a newly developed electric turbo charger. Unlike traditional turbos, Porsche’s latest innovation features an integrated electric motor, allowing for quicker and more efficient boost. In fact, the new 911 needs only one turbocharger as opposed to the typical two, while still getting meatier throttle response and performance. “We developed and tested various ideas and approaches to decide on a hybrid system that optimally suits the 911,” said Frank Moser, VP of the 911 and 718 model lines. “The result is a unique powertrain that is well-integrated into the overall concept and enhances the performance significantly.”

But the Porsche 911 is as famous for its striking silhouette as the power behind it. The 2025 Carrera GTS retains those classic good looks: the lateral lines, fastback design, and freestanding front wings that have made the car an icon for over a half century. But even those features have been tweaked and optimized, too; the front fascia panels that extend across the face of the vehicle have been completely overhauled. A set of five air flaps are controlled by adaptive front diffusors in the underbody which directs air flow as needed. At lower speeds or in low-power situations, the air flaps close in order to improve aerodynamics. When you need every last ounce of power, the f laps open, funneling air to the radiators. Best of all, these assistance systems are automatic, meaning the vehicle is always adapting to maximize performance.

In the cockpit, the Carrera GTS features Porsche’s first-ever fully digital instrument cluster. A 12.6-inch curved multimedia screen offers seven different display views, including a classic display that reproduces the famous 911 five tube display, a nod to yesteryear. And that is the beauty of the 2025 Carrera GTS: you’ll recognize it in an instant and still be wowed by what it can do on the track or on the highway.
