MOTHERLY LOVE
Jean fabric most likely emerged in the 16th century in and around the cities of Genoa, Italy, and Nîmes, France (“Gênes,” the French word for Genoa, is probably the origin of the word we call them by today). The style of trousers referred to as “blue jeans” was invented by Jacob W. Davis and Levi Strauss & Co. in 1871, and has been, of course, legendary since.

Mother Denim

Once in a blue moon, a brand comes along that lights our imagination when it comes to this sturdy cotton warp faced cloth. Most recently, that brand is MOTHER. Founded in 2010 by designers Lela Becker and Tim Kaeding, the made in LA label quickly gained a cult following for its jeans’ softness and uniquely fl attering fi t. The company, its founders explained, embodies their memories of growing up on the West Coast in the 1970s, invoking an indie free spirit yet still appealing to a wearer’s intellectual side. The name’s origin, they added, plays with the idea of duality: the word “mother” can be nurturing or as part of a curse phrase—a thoughtful juxtaposition of hard and soft. garmany.com
