FISHER, THE AUSSIE-BORN PROFESSIONAL SURFER TURNED TECH HOUSE POWERBRAND, IS RIDING A DIFFERENT WAVE AS OF LATE, TAKING THE ELECTRONICA STAGE BY SUPERSTORM EVEN NABBING A GRAMMY NOD FOR HIS 2018 MEGA-HIT “LOSING IT”

BY DAN SALAMONE

BORN: Paul Nicholas Fisher, on November 5, 1985, in Queensland, Australia.

SOUND: Fun, wobbly early ‘00s-influenced house, redolent of greats like Basement Jaxx, Carl Cox, Mr. Oizo, and Armand van Helden.

BIG BREAK: After first pursuing a career as a professional surfer early in life (during which he competed in the World Surf League Qualifying Series several times), he began pursuing music full time in 2012. His first forays into attention-grabbing electronica was as one half of the duo Cut Snake, along with fellow surfer Leigh “Sedz” Sedley. The group’s debut EP, Life’s a Beach, was an immediate breakout success, reaching the Top 5 on the iTunes Dance Chart in Australia and played on Pete Tong’s legendary BBC show, Radio 1 Essential Selection.

NOTABLE ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Despite the exciting, immediate success he enjoyed as half of Cut Snake, Fisher was restless to go out on his own, releasing his debut single “Ya Kidding” to early raves. Just one year later, Fisher broke big as a solo artist, releasing two mammoth singles “Losing It” and “You Little Beauty” that both reached No. 1 on the Billboard US Dance Club chart. That same year, Fisher hit No. 2 on the influential dance music list, the Triple J Hottest 100 of 2019.

LATEST WORK: Though Fisher has yet to reach a full LP, his 2020 EP, Freaks, provides a fantastic primer of his prowess. Since then, he’s released a steady stream of excellent singles, most recently with 2024’s “Boost Up” (with Flowdan) and “Ocean” (featuring AR/CO). The same year, he also remixed Gotye’s cult-hit “Somebody That I Used to Know,” that he titled “Somebody.”
