ALL EYES ON YOU
The lips aren’t having all the fun; while this summer we saw more subdued shades of brown and khaki, this fall is all about standout eyes. And while traditional autumn colors are rolling out below the nose, the eyes are loving electric blues, neon greens, and high-voltage yellows, from the liner to the shadow. The beloved kitten eye is also celebrating a resurgence. If choosing a neon or rich, jewel-toned shadow, juxtapose the vibrant hue with jet black liner in a cat shaped or fully lined eye and don’t forget your waterline for maximum drama.
MY LIPS ARE UNSEALED
The arrival of fall traditionally brings deep, rich, crimson shades in many forms: orange, yellow, and russet-colored leaves, pumpkin spice lattes and apple ciders, and historically, amber, red, and merlot-tinted hair and lips. Though red lips will always be an autumnal trademark, 2021 is a little different; after a year and a half of masking, the fall runways and beauty gurus agree this season calls for even brighter, hyper glossed, statement-making lips. Keep your usual lineup of deep burgundy and candy apple red on deck, but throw in a tangerine or baby coral to shake things up. And don’t reserve statement lips just for special events. We’re seeing full color everywhere, from the coffee shop to casual happy hours, even with naked eyes and cheeks.
JUST BREATHE
One trend that’s carrying over from summer (and a year of lockdowns at large) is super hydrated, dewy skin with less-is-more coverage. While the eyes and lips are saturated with color, makeup artists are still letting the skin breathe, a lasting relic from mask-wearing days that hasn’t lost its luster. While glossy skin usually leans more daytime, expect it to carry into the night this year, even amid electric eyes and flashy lips. Skin that shines from within starts with your skincare routine, so keep up with your daily checklist: cleanse, gently exfoliate, tone, moisturize, and protect (put sunscreen on even when it’s overcast or rainy). For makeup, choose liquid or cream-based products, such as illuminators, highlighters, tinted moisturizers, or light coverage foundation, and let your natural radiance shine.
