Ford sharpens its most ferocious Mustang yet with the Dark Horse SC – a track-minded evolution of the world’s most iconic muscle car
By Evan Monroe
Not every legend needs reinvention; some simply need refinement. With the Mustang Dark Horse SC, Ford shifts the conversation away from nostalgia and toward intent, offering a machine aimed squarely at drivers who value precision as much as power. While the Mustang’s legacy has long been tied to boulevard cruising and straight-line bravado, the Dark Horse lineage represents a modern pivot: one that leans harder into track capability, chassis balance, and driver engagement. Built on the foundation of the seventh-generation Mustang, the Dark Horse SC distills decades of performance evolution into a more focused and deliberate expression of the world’s most successful muscle car. (Ford introduced its wild pony in 1964, and reached a record-breaking one million sales in the first 18 months.)

At its core, the Dark Horse SC is powered by the same supercharged 5.0L Predator V-8 that feeds the Mustang GTD supercar that hit the streets last year, and while it likely won’t command the GTD’s mind-melting 815 horsepower, Ford confirmed the SC will cross the 700-hp threshold. It’s an agile beast bred for the track, and Ford reworked the entire suspension to make the car feel sharper, lighter, and more responsive behind the wheel. MagneRide adaptive dampers come standard, paired with firmer springs for tighter body control. Wider anti-roll bars, updated suspension mounting points, and a lightweight magnesium strut tower brace help the car stay planted through corners, while forged aluminum components replace heavier steel pieces to trim weight. The result is a noticeably wider stance – more than an inch broader than the standard Dark Horse – that improves stability and grip. Steering has also been recalibrated with revised geometry and hardware for quicker responses, and stopping power comes from serious Brembo brakes, featuring six-piston calipers up front and four-piston units in the rear. For drivers looking to fine-tune the experience, Variable Traction Control allows five levels of adjustability in Track mode, letting the Dark Horse SC be as composed or as playful as the road – or racetrack – demands.
