INTERESTED IN A SPRINGTIME SOJOURN WITHOUT THE HASSLE OF PASSPORTS AND INTERNATIONAL FLIGHTS? LOOK NO FURTHER THAN THE BREAKERS, PALM BEACH’S ICONIC HOTEL AND RESORT: A CENTURY-OLD, EUROPEAN-INSPIRED PARADISE THAT HAS STOOD THE TEST OF TIME
BY MATTHEW MIZRACH
Founded by Henry M. Flagler, one of America’s most prominent industrialists, the Breakers has cemented its legacy as the epitome of luxury since its doors first opened at the turn of the 20th century. Garnering a reputation for hosting a who’s who of glammed-out guests, from industry tycoons like the Rockefellers and Vanderbilts to countless U.S. presidents, European nobility, and Hollywood elite, the opulent resort has earned its place as one of Palm Beach’s most iconic landmarks. Modeled after the famed Villa Medici in Rome, the resort required a massive undertaking to even complete. It took the combined effort of 75 artisans transplanted from Italy just to create the intricate paintings that adorn the 200-foot main lobby and first-floor public spaces.
Deriving its moniker from the oceanfront hotel’s proximity to the waves, the Breakers fully embraces its affinity for the water. The resort includes four pools, five whirlpool spas, a private beach, and a surplus of waterfront activities for guests eager to get lost in adventure. For those searching for a more private experience, luxury poolside bungalows are available for rent daily and are the perfect way to ease into screen-free vacay mode. The decadent indoor/outdoor spa is a sight to behold, with pampering aplenty that includes tailored massages, inventive facials, a nail salon, hair care and cosmetics, and even a Spa Petite for the little ones (they’re on vacation, too!). And for those itching to squeeze in some tee time, the resort is home to Florida’s oldest golf course, which underwent a full-scale renovation in 2018.
