IN A STUNNING UNVEILING, THE HIGH-PERFORMANCE SUB-BRAND MERCEDES-AMG SHOCKS THE AUTO REALM WITH THE INTRODUCTION OF ITS MOST POWERFUL STREET CAR YET, AN 805-HP HYBRID BEAST WITH THE CLASS AND GENTILITY OF A LUXURY COUPE
BY AMANDA MCCOY
On the street, the letters AMG boast immediate braggadocio. As the German luxury marque’s high-performance sibling, Mercedes-AMG dials up the thrills on a dizzying fleet of Affalterbach-born machines, from the SL Roaster to the meaty GLS. Founded in 1967 by a pair of former Mercedes engineers, AMG got its start building and tuning racing engines, eventually expanding into customization its 1971 Red Pig, built off a Mercedes-Benz 300SEL 6.3 V8 executive sedan, remains legendary in enthusiast circles some 50 years later providing aftermarket performance and tuning enhancements for Mercedes-Benz vehicles. Then, in the ‘90s, the two brands flipped autodom on its head when they announced an official marriage, forging the Mercedes-AMG spinoff, a stimulating story of speed and style.
Just this year, following the 2024 redesign of its GT Coupe, Mercedes-AMG unleashed its fastest road car ever the GT 63 S E Performance. One of three new 2025 models in the AMG GT Coupe clan, the GT63 S E slices through the air like a jet, reaching 60 mph in 2.7 seconds. To achieve the speed, the coupe is fed by a 4.0L V8 biturbo (hand-crafted by a single engineer) at the front, joined by an in-house electric drive unit and a Formula 1–derived battery at the rear. Together, the system churns out a thundering 805 ponies along with 1,047 lb.-ft. of torque, topping out at 199 mph. Because electric motors are the de facto gods of instantaneous torque, the hybrid variant shaves an entire half second from its 0-60 time over its next-fastest GT brother.
But brute force isn’t the only story here. The top model adds high-performance brakes for maximum stopping power, and a proprietary active ride control suspension offers a vast range of driving characteristics when you’re not blasting off the line. (An optional nose-lift system boosts the front end about an inch for steep hills or driveways.) The thrills continue on the interior, with AMG Performance Seats designed to offer a racetrack-like experience with adaptive bolsters, integrated headrests, and ventilation openings in the seat backrests. This is still Mercedes, after all, so they offer heating, cooling, and massaging functionality, as well.
The top-performance model starts at $194,900.
THE NEW GT FAMILY marks the U.S. introduction of Mercedes’ MANUFAKTUR Signature Program, featuring a stunning collection of uber-exclusive paints and Nappa leather upholstery with dramatic contrast stitching and diamond quilting.
THERE ARE NO FEWER THAN EIGHT driving models on the new top performer for a sweeping range of behind-the-wheel experiences. Choose from: Electric, Battery Hold, Comfort, Slippery, Sport, Sport+, RACE, and Individual to suit your mood and thrill levels.
ACTIVE REAR AXLE STEERING is standard equipment to ensure agile and stable handling while minimizing steer effort on the driver’s part. Adjusting to the vehicle’s speed, the rear wheels steer either in the opposite direction (up to 60 mph) or the same direction (above 60 mph) as the front wheels
SET THE SCENE on longer journeys with the optional ENERGIZING Comfort Package Plus, which integrates ambient lighting moods to create relaxing programs on roadtrips. There are also three different seat massaging modes to bring your personal masseuse aboard.
