ANCIENT BLOOMS

History has it that camellias, the iconic floral motif that exemplifies the House of Chanel, first caught founder Coco’s fancy as a teenager, when she witnessed a stage performance of Alexandre Dumas’ The Lady of Camellias. Then, years later, Chanel’s lover, Arthur Boy Capel, rekindled her love for the flower when he gifted her a bouquet of the winter blooms. After his death in a tragic car accident, Chanel surrounded herself with camellias, including silk versions as brooches, as a reminder of her one true love. This year, in the atelier’s Fall-Winter collection, artistic director Virginie Viard explored the bittersweet romance the brand harbors for this coveted bloom. From the giant installation of the flower positioned in the center of the catwalk to the parade of clothes covered in floral details, Viard once again validated Coco’s botanical obsession, paying beautiful homage to the house code. Dresses, jackets, knits, coats, and skirts were all embellished with the pristine white flower. Some standout pieces included signature tweed suits paired with culottes and lace leggings, long A-line dresses adding a light touch to seasonal dressing, and splashes of red and pink to break up the otherwise black and white palette. Even the accessories got the rosette treatment, rounding out this highly emblematic collection that Coco herself would’ve adored. chanel.com
