HOW THIS NYC-BASED GO-GETTER PLANS TO COMBINE PASSIONS FOR BOTH FASHION AND CHARITY

INDUSTRY: How did you get started in modeling?
Lauren Casarona: I was scouted, actually…was working as a weekend nanny for a family on the Upper East Side and a lady came up to me on the street and said, “I really think you’d be a great model.” I replied, “I don’t think so, I’m just working and paying for school.” Eventually I found my way to a couple of agencies, and that’s how it started. I now work with Posh Modeling Agency in New Jersey and Wilhelmina in New York.

Tell us about that work experience.
I just did Maxim Mexico, which was exciting and fun. I’ve also done five seasons of New York Fashion Week, and love going to Miami Swim Week. I get to shoot for Fila frequently, too, which is awesome because that brand is making such a cool comeback. I mostly do bridal and swim.

What are some other interests?
I just graduated from the City University of New York with a degree in communications and media, and also studied film at the Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute, which I loved. I’ve always been into music as well…went to Manhattan School of Music in high school in its pre-college division. I also have a passion for education, and volunteer with New York Cares. I’d love to organize an event for kids who don’t have the opportunity to see the different avenues of fashion. There are so many things they can do besides model—ways to get involved professionally in all the creative components that go into this industry. The real talent isn’t walking the runway, it’s everyone behind the scenes.

Where is home now?
Manhattan, on the Upper East Side, though I’m originally from Princeton Junction. I find New York City to be so much more competitive. If you live here, you get a different level of respect—I think because it’s so brutal. It made me tough, which I really appreciate, and has also given me an opportunity to help other people with modeling because I’ve gotten to know so many in the business.

Describe your personality in three words.
Empathetic, kind, and gentle.

What do you see for your future?
More than anything, I want to be a mom one day, so my dream is to have my own family and to hopefully combine my love for charity work and fashion. I would also like to do something in addition to modeling as I get older…grow my skill set a bit.
