Long before Biagio M. Pacifico, D.O., enrolled in medical school, he knew he wanted to be a plastic surgeon.

“This specialty handles such a breadth of cases cosmetic and reconstructive…complex hand surgeries, even burn and wound care,” he said. “I saw an opportunity from the start to make a big impact on people’s lives.”

So, after Pacifico earned an undergraduate degree from Fordham University, he went on to get his medical degree on Long Island, at the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine in Old Westbury. Next up was a general surgery residency, which he did at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center, an affiliate of Weill Cornell Medical College, and then extensive training at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York Presbyterian, and SUNY Downstate.

Pacifico was then accepted into the plastic and reconstructive surgery program at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, one of very few such programs in the country. There, he received training in all aspects of plastic and reconstructive surgery at various local facilities, including Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Hahnemann University Hospital, and Cancer Treatment Centers of America.

“I had many wonderful mentors who were very influential in my career,” he noted, adding that for the past five years, he has been seeing patients in Brooklyn, Staten Island, and New Jersey as a board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon. “Reconstructive surgery is a major part of my practice, but I also maintain a concentration on cosmetics, hand surgery, and pediatric cases. I love having the ability to help children heal from burns, accidents, or sports related injuries while also being able to assist people looking to turn back the clock.”

Pacifico has expertise in brow lifts, upper and lower eyelid lifts, face and neck lifts, ear pinning, brachioplasty, thigh lifts, liposuction, abdominoplasty, mommy makeovers, breast augmentation, breast lifts, breast reductions, scar revision, fat transfer, Brazilian butt lifts, post weight loss surgery, and male breast reduction. He further specializes in surgery of the hand, surgery of the facial skeleton, and wound care, and administers many kinds of reconstructive fillers, including Botox and Juvederm.

“We do a lot of upper and lower eyelid lifts,” he said. “We’re also performing a lot of mini facelifts, with very small incisions made at the back of the ear. A good portion of our patients come in for brachioplasty commonly called an arm lift which is done to reshape and provide improved contour to the upper arm and connecting area of the chest wall. This is a popular and essential procedure for patients who have undergone a massive weight loss, whether through surgery or diet and exercise.”

Nonetheless, the bulk of the M.D.’s cases are liposuction and breast augmentation. “Those are the top two plastic surgery procedures in the country,” he said, detailing how the key to successful cosmetic surgery lies in educating patients and individualizing care.

“A soft, natural look in all areas of cosmetic surgery is the key to patient satisfaction and excellent long term results,” he said. “So, in our practice, we offer patients the latest procedures, often utilizing minimally invasive techniques, which minimize downtime and optimize results.”

And although Pacifico says technology hasn’t necessarily ushered in dramatic changes to his surgical specialties over the past few years, there has been a push toward smaller incisions and more minimally invasive or nonsurgical treatments. That push has been a game changer.

“People who might never have considered plastic surgery before are now opting for a procedure because innovations have made it less invasive and more affordable,” he said. “You might not want to go under the knife for a full-fledged facelift, but filters, which can offer a vast improvement to the face, are now a very viable option.

What’s more, each of those options is offered to patients directly by Pacifico himself.

“We do have a cosmetic coordinator who answers, questions, coordinates appointments, and gives pricing. But a unique part of our practice is that patients always see me through every aspect of the process. The decision to have plastic surgery is a big one, and I walk each and every person through every step. Whether you’re opting to fix a bulging eyelid, undergoing complex hand surgery, or signing on for a breast augmentation, the experience is personalized. I’m there, from consultation to post-op.”

“I love my job,” he added. “I look forward to going to work every single day because I enjoy seeing patients react to their outcomes. Plastic surgery is a specialty where the fruits of labor are evident clearly and quickly. And to be able to make a marked improvement in someone’s life’s truly rewarding”
