SOFT TOUCH

Givenchy made a case for the classics albeit through a more contemporary lens in its Spring/ Summer 2024 collection. Crisp tailoring against the backdrop of playful elements like ruched detailing on dresses and shoes, garter-fastened skirts, floral embroidery, and lace peeking through regal gowns made for a spirited affair. Head designer Matthew M. Williams used archival diaries from Givenchy’s past, mainly founder Hubert de Givenchy’s affection for lace, flowers, and distinctive Parisian glamour, as a guiding light to create a collection that pushes boundaries while keeping in line with the brand’s DNA. A few standout looks involved sinuous layering of sheer fabrics to create a kind of airy lightness to form-fitting silhouettes, latticed pearls and crystals on dresses, and a constant infusion of blue hues. Worn with streamlined accessories like compact clutches with big buckles, headband tiaras, and opera gloves, the looks offered a hefty dose of cool-girl attitude. givenchy.com

TAKING FLIGHT

As far as couture collaborations go, cartoons are not an unexpected muse. From Givenchy’s adoration for Bambi, Gucci’s ardor for Disney, or Loewe’s fervor for My Neighbor Totoro, cartoons and couture have long yielded exciting partnerships. The latest animation meets-high-fashion collection is Fendi’s recent link-up with Pokemon and FRGMT, in honor of the Chinese zodiac’s Year of the Dragon. Japanese multidisciplinary artist and FRGMT’s head designer, Hiroshi Fujiwara, reinterpreted the maison’s signature Peekaboo and Baguette bags with emblazoned figures of dragon-style Pokemon Dratini, Dragonair, and Dragonite in bright yellow as an ode to the Chinese zodiac sign. Headlining the collection is Fendi’s pièce de résistance: the iconic medium Baguette entirely embroidered with beads that create the instantly identifiable FF motif along with all three dragon figures. Finished with black leather, multicolor beaded fringes, and metal wings, this iconoclast is sure to fly off the shelf. fendi.com
