ONE OF THE MOST EXCLUSIVE ACCOMMODATIONS ON EARTH, OL JOGI IN KENYA PLACES VISITORS IN A COMBINATION OF LUXURY AND NATURAL SPLENDOR THAT’S UNLIKE ANY OTHER RESORT EXPERIENCE

BY TIA KIM

During the time the American (but French born) billionaire businessman, art dealer, and racehorse owner/breeder Alec Wildenstein was building Ol Jogi and its associated wildlife sanctuary a 58,000 acre expanse of pristine and private natural spaces 25 miles northwest of Mt. Kenya his zeal for conservation bordered on the maniacal. Wildenstein, who died in 2008 not long after Ol Jogi’s completion, conceived the complex (a main house and seven associated cottages), a onetime cattle ranch, as being newly dedicated to the preservation of endangered species. Yes, it is now one of the world’s most exclusive vacation retreats with week long packages for up to 14 guests ringing in at approximately $250,000 but the proceeds, and principal, are about maintaining nearby flora and fauna (including the critically endangered black rhino), as well as a center where rescued animals are rehabilitated.

Ol Jogi guests are treated to an experience of complete privacy and splendor unequaled in the whole of East Africa; from flamingoes on Lake Bogoria to the zebras, giraffes, hippos, and baboons that congregate at the nearby watering hole, immersion is central to the wonder here. Among staff members is a full time wildlife and security manager, along with a massage therapist and kitchen crew. Rooms and cottages feature bespoke furniture, Wildenstein family antiques, his and her’s dressing rooms and bathrooms (with down pour force rain showers and Jacuzzis), and just next to the pool house is found a gym, steam room, and spa.

The resort is a breathtaking 45 minute private flight from Nairobi, and reservations can be made online.
