VINTAGE GLAMOUR

Palisociety opens their ninth Los Angeles hotel this spring, with an exclusive 44-room boutique gem in Beverly Hills, a short walk from Rodeo Drive. Originally built as a private residence in 1939, The Hôtel Lili brings guests back to the glamorous days of Hollywood’s Golden Age with custom-designed furnishings, Marshall speakers and a sexy cocktail bar. Modern comforts include a 50-inch flatscreen TVs, well-curated gourmet minibar and EV chargers. Complimentary bubbles at check-in and an afternoon lemonade and candy bar feel more like an eccentric friend’s home than a typical hotel, and a color palette of warm camel, orange and mustard yellow hues adds to the feeling of warmth. 140 South Lasky Drive, Beverly Hills, thehotellili.com

FIELD NOTES

The first California entry from celebrated chef Marcus Jernmark (formerly of Aquavit and Per Se in the Big Apple), Lielle is a vibrant tasting experience dipped in Nordic cool. The 42-seat subterranean restaurant is minimalist and moody, rendered in natural woods and dim lighting a la the European Bistronomy movement, letting the four-course prix fixe menu do the talking. Jernmark forged close relationships with coastal farms, vineyards, and ranches throughout the state to source ingredients, thus dishes are hyper local and celebrate the Golden State’s rich bounty, from abalone BBQ seaweed rice to artichoke and citrus with black truffles. The menu changes monthly, and expect a California-heavy wine pairing list, too. 9575 W Pico Boulevard, lielle.la/therestaurant

EMOJI JOY

Japan House Los Angeles recently debuted a new exhibition, “Pictograms: Iconic Japanese Designs” that runs through Sunday, May 3. The free exhibition traces the Japanese history of pictograms from the first set of iconic symbols used for the events and facilities of the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games to today’s interactive designs. Tracing a path from ancient kanji (Japanese characters) to contemporary emoji, discover how the beauty and precision of Japanese design has shaped the art of visual communication. Visitors are also invited to engage firsthand with the creative process in a dedicated pictogram studio. 6801 Hollywood Boulevard, japanhousela.com
