READY TO ROLL

With an unexpected location beside a 7-Eleven convenience store, Kusaki is an intimate plant-based sushi restaurant led by young Filipina chef Pearl Steffie. Some of the nigiri and sashimi mimic fish such as salmon, tuna, and yellow tail, using plant-based fish from Fysh Foods, while other nigiri bites feature vegetables like torched bell peppers, miso eggplant, and trumpet mushrooms. Along with sushi, the maitake wontons in chili garlic oil are a must-order, and the five or seven-course omakase is a great option for first-time visitors to try all the greatest hits, including a not-too-sweet miso brownie brittle as a healthy indulgence to end the night. 2535 S Barrington Avenue, kusakila.com

ALL- STAR

Five years after its first renderings were released to the public, the Clippers’ new home in Inglewood is gearing up for its grand opening ahead of the 2024-2025 basketball season. The Inuit Dome, deemed the world’s most expensive basketball arena, will be christened by Bruno Mars in August with back-to-back shows on the 15 and 16. (The venue is already scheduled to host the 2026 NBA All-Stars game, and will serve as a venue in the 2028 Olympics.) The $2 billion arena will offer an impressive culinary spread, too. Think bacon-wrapped hot dogs with Niman Ranch franks, gourmet hand-rolled pretzels, Detroit-style pies, and sushi by a former Nobu chef. There’s also a VIP Clubhouse with premium buffet options alongside signature cocktails. 3930 W Century Boulevard, Inglewood, intuitdome.com

A PROPER POUR

The stylish Santa Monica Proper Hotel is becoming a culinary powerhouse between lobby bar Palma’s new weekend afternoon tea and rooftop revelry at Calabra. Palma puts a decidedly California spin on the British tradition, with aged goat cheese chive scones and funky finger sandwiches like smoked albacore tuna served on turmeric date bread along with requisite profiter oles, macarons, and canelé. Kelly Wearstler’s bohemian design makes for a comfortable living space, and it’s an elegant daytime celebration for birthdays, baby showers, and bachelorettes. Add bottomless prosecco and you’ll be spilling all the tea. 700 Wilshire Boulevard, Santa Monica, properhotel.com/santa-monica
