CONTEMPORARY KAISEKI

Tokyo Restaurants Factory, which operates fine dining Japanese restaurants in Japan, Taiwan, and Sushi Amane in New York, opened a new concept, dubbed Wano, in the former Mifune space. Diners opt for either an omakase sushi tasting menu by chef Hiroyuki Sato or a kaiseki tasting menu by head chef Ryota Sakaba. Both chefs have decades of experience working in high end kitchens in Japan, where Sakaba even became a vegetable sommelier. Tempura fried oysters garnished with lime and sake steamed abalone topped with a decadent serving of Hokkaido sea urchin are a couple highlights from the kaiseki menu. Italian architect and designer Piero Lissoni makes his New York hotel debut with Hotel AKA NoMad, where Japanese and Scandinavian minimalism inspire the sleek materials, clean lines, and warm tones that feel more like a sophisticated friend’s apartment than a traditional hotel. Complimentary European breakfast is included with each stay and the fourth floor common area includes amenities like a small fitness center outfitted with Techno gym equipment, a relaxing work space, and outdoor terrace that hosts intimate movie screenings. Last fall, in an unlikely but auspicious partnership, Tiger Woods teamed up with music icon (and successful restaurateur) Justin Timer lake to debut T Squared Social, a dining plus entertainment concept in Midtown. Stretching 22,000 square feet a large space by an metric, but simply massive for the island of Manhattan the lively venue boasts a full service restaurant and bar, plus Full Swing golf simulators, darts, duckpin bowling, and 35 TVs (one tops 200 inches). EATS FROM THE EAST

The team behind Williamsburg Chinese eatery Antidote opened their second restaurant together, this time a Southeast Asian odyssey in Flatiron. The menu at Nemesis has strong influences from Thai cuisine, reflecting executive chef Francis Tanrantana’s heritage. For example, khao soi gai is an aromatic noodle soup with crispy chicken thigh, fragrant curry, and fresh Thai herbs. Skate fish marinated in house made sambal glaze, twice cooked curry pork ribs, and a spicy mushroom padcha stir fry are a few more fan favorites. All the cool kids are staying in this hip new boutique hotel on the LES, whose design aesthetic speaks to New York’s grit and creative spirit. There’s no signage, just an unmarked corridor decorated with bold street art leading to the entrance.
