IS IT A BIRD OR IS IT A PLANE? MEET AIRLANDER 10, THE WORLD’S FIRST ELECTRIC AND JET-FUELED HYBRID PASSENGER AIRSHIP, SCHEDULED TO TAKE FLIGHT IN 2025
BY ARCHANA AITHAL ROSE
Capitalizing on the most fervent movement of our generation, sustainability, U.K.-based HAV (Hybrid Air Vehicles) is daring to go where no man or enterprise has gone before. HAV’s long term goal is to forward the future of zero-carbon aviation, and when the Air lander takes flight, it will emit 90% less carbon than the average passenger plane. With a range of 4,000 nautical miles and a top speed of 130 kilometers per hour (about 81 mph), this balloon-like airship can stay airborne for up to five days. Impressive specs aside, the interior of this 100-passenger carrier isn’t too shabby, either. Flooded with natural light through floor-to-ceiling windows, passengers on board can take in breathtaking views from the comfort of the aircraft’s unique aisle-style seating. To ensure a smooth sail, the cabin will be prepared to weather extreme temperatures, gusty winds, and even lightning strikes. On track to begin passenger service by 2025, Airlander 10 aspires to redefine luxury travel and ecotourism in one.
