BMW’S LATEST ULTRA-LIMITED ROADSTER BRINGS A CUTTING EDGE DESIGN TO LIFE BY ERIK SCHONING
The BMW Skytop first debuted as a concept at the 2024 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, the renowned event held annually on the shores of Lake Como. Now, the two-seater roadster is a concept no longer, as BMW has announced a super-limited release of only 50 Skytops globally.
This open-top two-seater harkens back to iconic BMWs of yesteryear, including the 507 and the Z8. That history is readily apparent in the design language of the Skytop, from the arrow-shaped hood to the shark-nose design and tightening tail, all of which call to mind the classic Z8 silhouette. T he front end overall is one of BMW’s best, featuring an illuminated kidney grill and razor-thin LED headlights. (So thin, in fact, that the Skytop boasts the slimmest headlight profile currently available for automotive headlights).
A pronounced spline extends across the entire top of the vehicle, giving it a flowy design that emphasizes pure speed and grace. And the Skytop is pure grace: discreet winglets replace traditional door handles, light alloy wheels lend a subtle touch, and a subtly shifting hand-painted color scheme transitions seamlessly from interior to exterior. True to its roots as a concept car, the Skytop feels almost celestial, the kind of car that makes onlookers pinch themselves and ask if they’re dreaming.
But the Skytop is no museum piece. Built in the coachbuilding wing of the automaker’s Dingolfing factory, it’s a masterclass in performance. Like its predecessors in BMW’s roadster line, it features the most powerful V8 in the manufacturer’s lineup. Paired with a Steptronic Sport transmission, the Skytop goes from 0-60 in 3.3 seconds. The BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive system optimizes stability in even the trickiest conditions. Each vehicle is handbuilt and painstakingly crafted to rival BMW’s best machines.
With only 50 units in production, each Skytop is truly one-of-a-kind, an experience that rewards closer attention. In the interior, leather seats are accented by brogue-style decoration, done in a rich brown that carries through to the leather-trimmed soft top roof. Crystal applications are embedded in the cockpit, bracketing the BMW Live Cockpit Professional interface, which projects driving and navigation informa tion directly into the driver’s field of view. This is where the Skytop truly diverges from its predecessors, marrying the latest in driving technology and luxe materials with perhaps the richest design pedigree in automobiles.
The BMW Skytop is a vehicle for the enthusiasts, the collectors. Very few concept cars become a reality; those that do become instant treasures.
