BMW HAD THE NERVE TO GENTLY CHANGE DAMN NEAR EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS SIXTH GENERATION FLAGSHIP 7 SERIES SEDAN…AND THE RESULTS ARE STUNNING

BY EVAN MONROE

Early this year, BMW introduced a revised version of its most sales successful 7 Series to date. It’s, of course, a perilous proposition to tinker with an already good thing, so what the Bavarian maker did to temper any “Why change now?” pique was emphasize choice flexibility with its gentle but noticeable changes to body contour, interior, and performance. It now offers, for example, six , eight , or 12 cylinder turbocharged engine options, along with a new six cylinder plug in hybrid.

Updates touch almost every area of the body, including the front bumper, hood, headlights, front fenders, rear bumper, and tail lights. The 126.4 inch long wheelbase allows for 44.4 inches of rear leg room (roughly the same as a Rolls Royce Ghost), 41.1 inches up front. A taller front end sports a significantly larger BMW kidney grill with adjustable vanes that open when need for cooling air increases. The redesigned hood extends to the top of the grill and features more sculpted lines, while lower front bumper air intakes are now overlaid with large deflectors to guide oncoming air more efficiently and minimize turbulence around the wheel openings.

A new interior includes a screen group consisting of a instrument cluster display and a Control Display, which together extend functionality and provide needed improvement to the infotainment system. Trim strips, leather covered surfaces, and new light sources further contribute to the luxury proceedings, as does improved “acoustic performance” (aka lower interior noise). Nappa leather and BMW Merino full leather trim with extended quilting and new interior trim strips are on hand, and there is a variety of even plusher options available. The M Sport package includes a headliner in Anthracite, an M Sport leather steering wheel, and signature pedals and driver’s footrest, as well as illuminated door sill plates and Fineline Black wood interior trim strips with high gloss metal effect. Customers have the option of combining this package with a special version of the Nappa leather upholstery with extended appointments black leather with a distinctive stitching pattern and “M” piping.

Smart driver systems include Pedestrian Protection, Frontal Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning, and Blind Spot Detection.

The 740i Sedan starts at $86,450.
