WHY THE QUINCY IS THE PLACE TO LIVE FOR NEW BRUNSWICK’S GROWING NUMBER OF YOUNG PROFESSIONALS

BY JENNIFER VIKSE

Historic New Brunswick has plenty going for it these days, both old and new. Start with Rutgers University and the city’s thriving Financial and Arts Districts. Add in several hospitals, the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, and the corporate headquarters of Johnson & Johnson, and you have a healthcare hub. Then consider the influx of young professionals whose growing presence is helping to give the downtown a vital, hip feel.

To this list you can now add The Quincy, a nine floor residential building with plenty of style and an impressive list of amenities. The building, completed in 2018, offers a range of distinctive studio and one and two bedroom rental units. It’s currently at 80 percent capacity.
“The development of The Quincy had more of a creative angle,” explained David Strassberg, business manager with the Alliance Residential Company, which operates the building. From the beginning, young professionals were clearly interested in it, and the designers were able to respond to that as the project progressed. “Once we realized the dynamic was young and entrepreneurial, a younger demographic,” said Strassberg, “We really touched on a modern, eclectic type of environment. We went from a classic concept to something more vibrant. It’s minimalistic. It has a creative, energetic vibe.”

Specifically, the building’s designers made ample use of bold, bright colors and clean lines. Navy blue and purples are present throughout the common areas, and white quartz countertops work well with the contrasting grays and neutral tones in the apartments.

To compete with other buildings in the area, The Quincy’s developers came up with a long list of amenities that go well beyond the sleek lobby and elevators, including a dog park and pet spa; a bike storage room (including a bike sharing program); a media and entertainment room; a yoga/spin room; a Java Cyber Lounge; a club room with a demonstration kitchen; and a fitness center that offers on demand workouts.

“Word of mouth has played a large part in us growing quickly. We want to preserve our reputation, and keep our renters happy,” Strassberg said. “We did a lot of creative things and took a few measures to spruce up the environment in light of a younger population,” noting that Rutgers.

University is part of the community and that several renters are either enrolled there or work on campus. The grounds, intended to encourage social interaction, feature an outdoor common area as well as numerous indoor gathering spaces and a rooftop pool.

In addition, the staff holds regular events for residents to build a sense of community, and they have been well received.

“Everyone is on the go,” said Strassberg. “They are ultra-focused on their careers, and these events and spaces give them a place where they can mingle, network, and stay healthy and active with modern fitness equipment.”

The Quincy also prides itself on providing service that includes, among other things, a concierge and on call maintenance.

“I think the team is doing a phenomenal job,” said Strassberg. “The goal is to wow the residents. The service we provide does that. We really want to give them that five star experience.”

Units themselves are spacious; many have bay windows and some have floor to ceiling windows. The kitchens feature white quartz countertops with real marble backsplashes, GE stainless steel appliances, full size washers and dryers, and contemporary dark gray wooden cabinets. The apartments also have hardwood floors, top grade fixtures, and walk in closets. Bathrooms are done with contemporary wooden cabinets, ceramic tile floors, and sleek finishes. (There are second bathrooms in the two bedroom units.)

Several units are currently available at competitive rates. Studios (about 500 square feet and up) start at $1,720; one bedrooms (750 square feet and up) at $1,850; and two bedrooms/two bath rooms (about 1,000 square feet and up) at $2,480.

Apartments are priced depending on views, which are different for each unit, said Strassberg. “If you’re facing east, it’s the Raritan River. The north side faces East Brunswick, a little of Route 18, and the river. Behind us is the parking deck and historic St. George Street.”

One of The Quincy’s most popular features is its rooftop terrace, where there’s a pool, cabanas, and grills. Other extras include a direct access parking garage and a library.

An additional and pivotal draw is siting. Several retail, culinary, and cultural venues appealing to the same ranks of young professionals are within a mile of the development, including Stress Factory Comedy Club, State Theatre New Jersey, and Hub City Brewhouse.
