THE ALL-ELECTRIC LAMBORGHINI TERZO MILLENNIO CONCEPT SEEKS TO DEFINE SUPER SPORTS CARS FOR THE THIRD MILLENNIUM

BY EVAN MONROE

A concept teased in early November at MIT’s EmTech conference, the Lamborghini Terzo Millennio seems perfectly timed for the same year Blade Runner returned, as its prowling, almost sinister wedge body is, to us, a dead ringer for K’s ying police car.

A collaboration between Lambo and MIT, the idea was to imagine the supercar’s future, one in which energy storage, materials, propulsion, design, and emotion synergize into one formidable beast. Packing four electric motors (one for each wheel), the Terzo Millennio ventures from conventional battery storage, opting instead for super capacitors, which, among other virtues, store and deliver electricity faster than Li-ion batteries, withstand more charge cycles, and have higher capacities. (Lamborghini currently uses super capacitors to power the stop-start system of its Aventador.)

MIT is researching ways of using the carbon ber body of the concept model as an energy storage medium, turning it into a battery of sorts. As envisioned, the panels will also initiate a “self-repairing” process in the event of body damage to prevent any minor cracks from growing
The cockpit is pushed forward a good deal, even compared to existing Lambos, with a number of air channels incorporated to keep the car planted.
Its virtual heads-up system allows for more than travelling the highways of a future world: the Piloted Driving simulation will take a driver around a screen-rendered track (such as Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari, near the Italian town of Imola) before he or she takes over—experiencing the real car and circuit while following a virtual ghost car.
Stefano Domenicali, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Automobili Lamborghini, explained that the MIT and Sant’Agata Bolognese, Italy-based automaker’s design is a “collaboration between two outstanding entities for the creation of a project that intends to write an important page in the future of super sports cars for the third millennium.”
