LAUDED IN THE EDM REALM AS THE “QUEEN OF TECHNO,” 28 YEAR OLD DJ CHARLOTTE DE WITTE CONTINUES HER RAPID ASCENT TO SUPERSTARDOM

BY TIA KIM

BORN: Ghent, Belgium.

SOUND: Dark, hard-punching techno with pounding rhythms and at times haunting undertones.

EARLY CAREER: De Witte began spinning at 17 years old in her hometown. On the day after her 18th birthday, she won a DJ competition with a grand prize to open the main stage at the wildly popular Belgian EDM festival, Tomorrow land. She adopted the pseudonym “Raving George” in her nascent years to avoid any gender bias, but by 2015, the rising star was “ready to drop the cloak.” She later said, “I see no reason to hide myself behind a male alter ego anymore. This is who I am, and this is what I do.”

NOTABLE ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Her first hit single, “You’re Mine,” dropped in 2015 and featured fellow Belgian artist Oscar and the Wolf. The track put her on the map, and soon she began playing at shows and festivals across the globe, including Awakenings in Amsterdam, Time Warp in Germany, Avant Gardner in Brooklyn, and Ultra in Miami (the latter drew a crowd of 170,000 in 2019). The DJ launched her own label, KNTXT, in September 2019.

LATEST WORK: Her EP Return to Nowhere dropped in June and consists of four songs, “Return to Nowhere,” “Ensemble,” “Sgadi Li Mi,” and “What’s in the Past.” While the DJ admitted she wrote the music prior to the pandemic, she noted the desolate yet hopeful mood poignantly captures this period of isolation.

ALL-TIME FAVORITE ARTIST: The Beatles.
