Speedy, stable, and with a shocking amount of interior room, the Lagoon 39 catamaran is the best of sail and power combined

Tailing enthusiasts don’t have to be reminded of the elegance, quiet, and environmental sustainability a life propelled by the wind promises. What they do have to make accommodations with, however, is that sailing yachts, even lengthy ones, simply can’t compare in terms of headroom, beam, saloon size, berths, and deck space with their cabin cruiser and sports fisherman counterparts.

But, in fact, they can, in the form of a catamaran.

The Lagoon 39—the result of design synergy between the architects at Van Peteghem-Lauriot Prévost (VPLP) and the Lagoon design department out of Bordeaux Cedex, France, is a compact version of the mighty Lagoon 52, but sacrifices virtually nothing in terms of spaciousness or performance. VPLP’s offshore racing heritage is apparent throughout, not least in the gullwing, elevated, and slightly off-center flybridge cockpit and slightly aft-placed mast, which combine to provide stunning views capes in every direction (handy, since the 39 is capable of being crewed by a single person). Speedy, stable, and with a shocking amount of interior room, it is very much the best of sail and power combined.

Only relatively recently available in the United States, the Lagoon was built with an eye to accommodating a spectrum of owners—from day sailors to offshore racers—and so is available in customizable two- to four-cabin layouts, each with private bathroom and shower. The cabins offer ample natural lighting thanks to fixed hull windows, and are ventilated via deck hatches and portholes that open to the side. The saloon includes a large dining area forward and slightly to starboard, a chart table with navigation electronics panel, and a small desk with extension flap. Aft to port, the, L-shaped galley has direct access to the cockpit for better usability and conviviality. An ultra-spacious option is the two-cabin version, with a king-sized bed, desk, sofa, large hanging locker, and a wide bathroom forward in each hull. Approximately $340,000.
