Medicine didn’t originally point Shahmeen Irshad, MD, toward aesthetics. Although she had long been interested in the field, it wasn’t until years into her medical career that she began to imagine a different kind of practice, one where patient care extended beyond treating illness, helping them feel healthier, more confident, and more at ease in their own skin.

Born and raised in Staten Island, Dr. Irshad attended medical school in the Caribbean before returning to New York to complete her residency in internal medicine at Richmond University Medical Center. After residency, she worked as a locum physician in New Jersey, an experience that exposed her to clinicians who had established independent aesthetic practices. Watching those physicians build practices centered on long-term relationships changed the way she thought about patient care. What appealed to her wasn’t just the opportunity to build her own practice – it was the relationships those physicians developed with their patients. Rather than seeing patients for isolated concerns, they had the time to understand broader health goals and develop individualized treatment plans over time. That experience ultimately inspired Dr. Irshad to launch Amara Medical NYC, where she could combine her medical background with a more collaborative, relationship-driven model of care.

“As a physician, I was drawn to aesthetic and functional medicine because they allow me to help patients not only treat illness, but optimize their health, confidence, and quality of life,” said Dr. Irshad. “My background in internal medicine gives me a greater understanding of the connection between wellness and appearance, enabling me to take a comprehensive approach to patient care.”

That perspective became the foundation of Amara. Rather than viewing aesthetics as a catalog of cosmetic procedures, Dr. Irshad takes a broader view, combining physician-led aesthetic treatments with functional medicine, weight management, peptides, and longevity therapies that support overall health and vitality. The goal, she explained, isn’t simply to improve someone’s appearance or shave a few years from the clock, but to help them feel better from the inside out.

“Personalization is everything,” she said. “It’s not a service on a menu. We offer tailored treatment plans to remedy your personal concerns.”

This philosophy reflects one of the most valuable lessons Dr. Irshad brought with her from her years in internal medicine. Early in her career, she admired practices where a physician and a small team knew every patient individually and took the time to understand not only the symptoms that brought them through the door, but the larger picture of their health. At Amara, consultations are intentionally collaborative, allowing patients to discuss their concerns before receiving recommendations customized specifically to their goals rather than a standardized treatment plan. The result is an experience that feels consultative, encouraging patients to embrace long-term wellness instead of addressing a single cosmetic concern.

Her practice has continued to evolve alongside a growing cultural interest in preventive wellness and minimally invasive aesthetics. Dr. Irshad said many patients today are seeking treatments that produce subtle, natural-looking results rather than dramatic transformations. Technologies like Sofwave, a non-invasive ultrasound treatment designed to stimulate the body’s natural collagen production and tighten skin, reflect that shift. Introduced at Amara earlier this year, it has quickly become one of the practice’s signature offerings, helping patients address fine lines and skin laxity without needles or downtime.

As patients increasingly prioritize authenticity and refinement over dramatic change, treatments like Sofwave align with Dr. Irshad’s belief that aesthetic medicine should enhance rather than dramatically alter a person’s appearance. She offers a suite of regenerative therapies that support the body’s own healing processes. Peptide therapy, for example, uses amino acid chains that can influence everything from collagen production and fat metabolism to muscle growth and cellular repair. Acting as biological messengers, these powerhouse compounds help cells communicate more effectively, working in harmony with the body for sustainable improvements that increase over time. Exosome therapy calls on microscopic messengers rich in growth factors and signaling molecules to aid in tissue repair, calm inflammation, foster skin elasticity, and even stimulate hair growth. By combining these therapies with aesthetic procedures when appropriate, Dr. Irshad aims to help patients achieve results that look effortless and stand the test of time, reinforcing her philosophy that aesthetic outcomes often begin with improving health beneath the surface.

“What sets my practice apart is that every treatment is physician-led, evidence-based, and personalized,” she said. “I combine advanced aesthetic treatments with functional medicine, weight management, peptides, and longevity therapies to help patients look their best, feel their best, and age with confidence. My mission is to blend luxury, science, and results while delivering the highest quality of care.”

This philosophy shapes the patient experience as well. Dr. Irshad never rushes through appointments; she emphasizes education and conversation, walking clients through each recommendation while developing relationships that go beyond a single visit. She believes patients should understand not only what her recommended treatment plan entails, but why it is the right strategy for their individual goals. It’s an approach that reflects the reason she decided to open her own clinic: not to move away from medicine, but to practice it in a way that allowed for deeper relationships and a more personalized path to wellness.

Even the practice’s name reflects that philosophy. Derived from an Arabic word associated with beauty and grace, “Amara” speaks to Dr. Irshad’s vision of helping patients age with confidence rather than chasing perfection. Ultimately, Amara is built around a simple idea: when patients feel healthier, they also feel more confident. By combining internal medicine with aesthetics, Dr. Irshad has created an environment where beauty is approached as a natural expression of overall health, helping patients leave looking – and feeling – like the brightest, most confident version of themselves.
