FOR ITS 150TH ANNIVERSARY JACK DANIEL’S OFFERS A 100-PROOF CUSTOM BLEND, AND A GLOBAL BARREL SCAVENGER HUNT

BY EVAN MONROE

In celebration of the 150th anniversary of the oldest registered distillery in the U.S., Jack Daniel’s released in September a limited-edition Tennessee whiskey, for which Master Distiller Je_ Arnett created a distinctive 80% corn, 12% barley and 8% rye blend, producinga custom taste profile.

“For this anniversary whiskey, our coopers slow-toasted its barrels to bring out the rich flavors and aromas of the wood, creating a contemporary expression of an 1866 barrel char,” explained Arnett.

The distillate is mellowed through ten feet of sugar maple charcoal before going into the specially-crafted new American oak barrels. Once filled, the barrels are placed in the “angel’s roost” of one of the oldest storage houses at the distillery. Bottled at 100 proof, the $99 150th Anniversary edition offers notes of butterscotch and to free upon first taste, followed by a full, smooth, and lingering finish of warm favors of toasted oak.

As part of the birthday celebration, the Lynchburg, Tennessee-based company—and top selling American whiskey brand in the world—announced the Jack Daniel’s Barrel Hunt, in which 150 handcrafted barrels have been hidden in various regions across the globe at historic and cultural sites, with clues on Jack Daniel’s Facebook pages to help guide fans to locations. Barrels are opened when the first person to arrive speaks the assigned password.
