Waxing Poetic

As the economy lulled and her industry changed, Olga Grappel knew it was time to modify her career. So, in November of 2010, the longtime beauty buff took a chance and opened a spa completely devoted to waxing.

“I actually have a background in pharmaceuticals, but there was a transition happening and I knew it was time to try something different,” Grappel said. “I was looking for something creative, something unique. I love the beauty industry and everything about it. I simply fell for this franchise and knew it was something I wanted to bring to Staten Island.”

So, after visiting a New Jersey location as a guest, Grappel explored the products and services offered by the national franchise of European Wax Centers (based in Aventura, Florida).

“Waxing is not something that people tend to talk about publicly,” Grappel said. “I felt it was important to bring an environment here where it’s acceptable to focus solely on it. The idea of waxing has become so popular, but Staten Islanders needed a place where they could feel comfortable and know they would receive professional, reliable service. There needed to be a center that focused on waxing and waxing only.”

And for Grappel, that perfect location was on a bustling portion of Hylan Boulevard in New Dorp. Inspired by French European influences, the facility invites clients into a soothing environment that features old world brick, decorative molding, and soft, light woods.

Revolutionary products like purple comfort wax simplify the service for waxing regulars and newcomers alike.

“Our purple comfort wax is breakthrough because it is— though this might be difficult to believe—a virtually painless alternative to regular wax,” Grappel explained. “It is 100 percent beeswax, alcohol free, and hypoallergenic. It doesn’t stick to the skin, and as with all of our services, is done in a clean environment where we do not double dip and the wax is never reused.”

The Wax Center also offers a stripless system that utilizes a “skin wrap” technique, allowing technicians to grab even the finest of hairs.

First time guests can make use of a trial offer, too: on the first visit to any center, women receive a free eyebrow, underarm, or bikini line wax; men receive a free eyebrow, ear or nose wax. Savings and referrals programs are also available.

The popularity of Grappel’s first location encouraged the opening of a second in Heartland Village this past May, and the business owner is looking to expand to a third location in Tottenville before long.

“We offer full services for both men and women and I think all of our clients appreciate the fact that our locations are completely devoted to waxing services,” Grappel concluded. “It makes the whole process a little more discreet and effortless and for our clients, that means a lot…all the anxiety is removed.”
