VALENTINO’S NEW CREATIVE DIRECTOR BRINGS A FRESH EDGE TO THE STORIED STYLE HOUSE

BY KIMBERLY LANDAU

Nested in the heart of Rome, the Eternal City, Valentino SpA, since its inception by Valentino Clemente Ludovico Garavani in 1960, has used history as a playground, and, as the company puts it, “is a place that produces both beauty and thought.” What started as a fanciful notion on the part of the namesake designer and his longtime associate and brilliant brand-mind Giancarlo Giammetti has turned into a $1 billion-plus revenue juggernaut that produces one-of-a-kind haute couture creations and women’s and men’s ready-to-wear, plus accessories, eyewear, and fragrances.

2016 marks a new beginning, under the creative direction of Pier Paolo Piccioli. His fresh set of values, both of the moment and faithful to Valentino’s heritage, are “grace and delicacy, both as an attitude and as a silhouette; a celebration of individuality; emotional beauty; and the blending and merging of different languages.”

Two new pieces for 2017-2018 are seen here. The Rock Stud Quilted Leather Moto Boot features a gorgeous diamond quilted cracked lambskin shaft, while the signature gunmetal-tonal Rock studs add an edgy touch. A _ at stacked heel, round toe, harness strap and side pulls, along with a lugged rubber outsole, add comfort and versatility. Made in Italy. $1,595.
