IN THE HOUSE OF JUSTICE, CHAOS IS KING. THE LEATHER-WRAPPED FRENCH DUO HAS BEEN TWISTING AND DISTORTING STYLES TO STUNNING EFFECT FOR TWO DECADES, SPINNING ERA-SPANNING SOUNDS THAT FEEL BOTH NOSTALGIC AND FUTURISTIC

BY DAN SALAMONE

BORN: Gaspard Augé in Besançon, Franche-Comté, France, in 1979, and Xavier Dulong de Rosnay in Seine-etMarne, France, in 1982

SOUND: Justice was once considered “Baby Daft Punk” for their similarly expert ability to incorporate electronica, disco, and ‘70s/’80s rock, prog, and metal into a thumping good time. With Daft Punk having taken a long sabbatical, Justice is the greatest current Gallic practitioner of the sound.

BIG BREAK: In 2003, Justice produced multiple tracks for the 2003 concept compilation album, Musclor Vision’s Hits Up to You, wherein the music was intended to sound like entries for the Eurovision Song Contest. Later that year, they burst big onto the scene with a hugely successful dance remix of the Simian track, “Never Be Alone,” which led to the duo getting signed to Ed Banger records. In 2006, that same song, renamed “We Are Your Friends,” climbed all the way up to the top 20 on the UK Singles Chart.

NOTABLE ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Their 2007 debut record, heretofore referred to as Cross (due to the cross on the album cover, which has remained the official logo for the band), was an international success, landing on the album charts in over a dozen countries, and cinching number 1 on both the UK and US Electronic/Dance Charts. They subsequently became a massive festival favorite, playing such notables as Coachella, the Sonar Festival (in Barcelona), the Fuji Rock Festival (in Niigata, Japan), the Roskilde Festival (in Roskilde, Denmark) and T in the Park Festival (in Kinross, Scotland). Since then, Justice has been an awards darling, winning three Grammys, including the award for Best Dance/ Electronic Recording in 2019 for their album, Woman Worldwide.
