THE COMEDY/MUSIC TRIO THE LONELY ISLAND, FEATURING SNL WRITER/PERFORMER ALUMS, COMES TO THE KINGS THEATRE ON ITS FIRST MAJOR TOUR

BY EVAN MONROE

A comedy trio formed in 2001 by Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone, The Lonely Island was originally, as often as not, a presentational expression of anxiety about the young men not being able to find work in the comedy and writing realms and would include short films, sketches, and occasionally music. Friends since their teens, their ensemble act was among the first to build an aggressive platform on YouTube. They were hired by Saturday Night Live in 2005 (all as writers, and Samberg as a featured player), but The Lonely Island endured as a concept in the form of segment pitches to SNL producer Lorne Michaels (including “Laser Cats” and “Dick in a Box”), and one–off songs that would eventually become the albums Incredibad and Turtleneck & Chain. In 2013, the group released its third studio effort, The Wack Album, which featured Hugh Jackman, Kristen Wiig, Robyn, Adam Levine, Kendrick Lamar, Justin Timberlake, and Lady Gaga.

The Lonely Island’s first major tour comes off the momentum of the group’s first live concert at last year’s Clusterfest in San Francisco packed with guests like Michael Bolton, T Pain and Chris Parnell, and met by rave reviews. The seven city jaunt kicks off June 15 at the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, and wraps June 29 at The Armory in Minneapolis, but finds its way to Kings Theatre on June 22. Combining music and frequently raunchy comedy in mingled doses, “many of the best moments of the night can’t be described easily,” The San Francisco Chronicle explains, “either because of the boundary pushing adult content or the creative stage work.”
