BORROWING ITS NAME FROM CAPTAIN JACK SPARROW’S INFAMOUS SHIP, THE BLACK PEARL IS A SAILING YACHT IN A CLASS OF ITS OWN AND PIRATES MORE THAN GOOD LOOKS FROM ITS PLUNDERING PROGENITOR

BY MATT MIZRACH

The prodigious ship in the first entry of Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, the Black Pearl is a legendary sailing vessel that’s aptly described as “nigh uncatchable” by its lovable yet idiosyncratic captain. It is this same level of mythic wonderment that designers Nuvolari Lenard, Villate Design, and Ken Freivokh Design brought to the table when creating their own version of the elusive vessel. The 350-foot sailing yacht that resulted is best summed up by its world-acclaimed builder, Oceanco, as “unlike any yacht the world has ever seen…the result of an elaborate and successful collaboration on the part of an international group of designers, engineers, naval architects, builders, and project managers.” Perhaps the most arresting visual elements of the Pearl are its three 230-foot DynaRig black carbon masts (the largest in the world), which when coupled with the power of the yacht’s hybrid propulsion system, results in an impressive 30-knot sail speed. Even more astonishing? The whopping 2,900-square-meter sails can be fully set in only seven minutes. The ship also features a unique single level engine room as well as custom amenities galore including a mid-deck hot tub.
