A DELICIOUS COLLABORATION BETWEEN TWO STATEN ISLAND MAINSTAYS, THIS CHOCOLATE PASTRY INFUSED STOUT INVITES THIRSTY PATRONS TO HAVE THEIR CAKE AND DRINK IT, TOO

BY AMANDA McCOY

Tompkinsville based Flagship Brewing Co. is famed for its creative seasonal collaborations with Staten Island staples, from a heat quenching hard seltzer variety with Ralph’s Italian Ices in the summer to a toasty Pumpkin Spice Latte Ale in conjunction with borough based coffee shop Beans & Leaves (aka autumn in a pint glass). And for the holiday season, the brewery teamed up for the second year in a row with the iconic Holtermann’s Bakery for the gloriously decadent Crumb Cake Stout.

The alchemy is as simple as it is sweet; during the brewing process, the Holtermann’s team joins the master brewers with the bakery’s venerable chocolate crumb cake in tow. They toss the full sheet cake into the boil kettle, yielding a rich, aromatic sipper that doubles as dessert.

“Holtermann’s Bakery is such a beloved staple of Staten Island,” said Flagship Brewery’s co-founder and president, James Sykes, of his partnership with the 137 year old bakery. “If you grew up here, this is where you ate dessert. This stout essentially tastes like a piece of their famous chocolate crumb cake, and it flew off the shelves when we introduced it around this same time last year.”

The stout was released in mid-November and comes in just under 10% ABV. As a seasonal limited edition, it’s only available while supplies last, and per the brewery’s president, that probably won’t be long.
