The brand new Superfast is not just the fastest street legal model in Ferrari’s history, it combines racing performance with suburban manners like simply no other new car. Building on the legacies of the F12berlinetta and F12 TDF, it’s aimed at clients demanding an uncompromising ultra sports car that will also be comfortable enough for daily use. Powered by a new 6.5 liter V12 engine (789 horsepower) and a dual clutch transmission that provides shorter up and down shift times and sharpened throttle response, the result is a 0 to 60 time of 2.8 seconds. Seen in silhouette, the 812 has a fastback sleekness a two box design with a high tail reminiscent of the glorious 365 GTB/4 of 1969. It’s the first Ferrari to sport both electric power steering and the latest 5.0 version of the maker’s patented Side Slip Control. The cabin has been given a sportier, more radical look than the F12’s, with main elements seeming to float, creating an effect of both thoroughbred racing eagerness and lean elegance, and the horizontal dash loops stylishly around the central air vents for a sophisticated, sculptural sensibility. In its 2019 configuration (though production is actually set to begin this February), Audi has refreshed its mid sized sport back with a chassis featuring new front and rear axles, along with variable four wheel steering (under 37 mph, rear wheels turn in the opposite direction of the front for better maneuverability; above that speed, they turn in the same direction for stability), and an optional self leveling adaptive air suspension. The 3 liter turbo V6 (340 hp) is hitched to a 7 speed S Tronic dual clutch tranny, and will motivate you from 0 to 60 mph in 5.2 seconds. There’s also a new 48 volt “mild hybrid” lithium ion battery powered motor on board, which allows the A7 to shut its combustion engine o while coasting (between 34 and 99 mph) to save fuel. Happily, Audi replaced last year’s rotary infotainment system controls subbing them for two stacked touchscreens (upper controls entertainment and navigation, the lower, slightly smaller controls climate and other functions). The sturdy but largely uninspired Japanese car market of the late ’80s dominated as it was (and still is) by practical family trucksters like the Accord and Camry was goosed in 1989 by the appearance of the very first market ready Asian supercar, the Acura NSX its lines inspired by the body contours of the F 16 ghter jet. It was stupendous in virtually every respect and very well received, but production was suspended in 2005, only to begin again ten years later. The new mid engine NSX is larger than any of its predecessors (11 inches longer than the original), and at 3,600 lbs., about 600 ticks heavier (though carbon fiber components help, along with aluminum structural elements). We love the new nose, with its strip thin array of LEDs underscored by an even narrower line of LED daytime running lights. Its nearly funny car sized side air scoops, along with other intakes, ain’t just for show, either; 10 ducted heat exchangers in all are responsible for cooling the mid mounted twin turbo 3.5 liter DOHC V6, mated to an all new 9 speed dual clutch transmission and Direct Drive Motor. That translates to 573 horsepower and a spirit animal conjuring 0 to 60 time of, yes, three goddamn seconds. From $160,000

What some argue is America’s only true hypercar got a fresh redesign last year, so for 2018, we just have some tweaks (second year is always a good one to jump in anyway). The relatively compact 3.5 liter V6 and 7 speed dual clutch automatic transmission (no manual option, sorry) produce a stupendous amount of power (647 hp), while the carbon fiber body panels and aluminum substructures keep things lean all around for better high speed performance. Ford means business as far as that last noun is concerned; its front end was inspired by “keel suspension” designs frequently seen on Le Mans and Formula cars. The Interior is frankly, cramped (as any race car is likely to be), and includes an FIA certified roll cage behind the headliner. Zero to 60 times are under three seconds; just be sure to pay attention and not be distracted by the wonderful automatically retracting wing and back edge flaps. From $450,000

Celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, Jaguar’s flagship model, now in its 13th design iteration (the latest suitably unveiled at the Saatchi Gallery in London) is longer and wider than the model it replaced. As is customary, there’s both a standard and extended wheelbase version available, but this year also brings an additional member of the family: the XJR575 performance model, built by Jag’s Special Vehicle Operations. XJ’s standard motor is a 340 hp, 3 liter supercharged V6 hitched to an all wheel drive system good for 0 to 60 times of 5.4 seconds. The optional 5 liter supercharged V8 kicks out 470 horsepower, and while the XJR575 uses the same 5 liter V8, it’s tuned to produce a thrilling 575 ponies. Swoopy but assertive styling includes an imposing and upright front grille with mesh detail, full LED headlights, and eye catching LED taillights with a distinctive pinstripe graphic. From $75,400

Named after the primitive wild cattle which were the ancestors of today’s bulls and cows, the Urus might seem at first glance Lambo’s first attempt at an SUV, but actually its first was the LM002, a boxy and V12 propelled Hummer look alike, of which only 300 were made between 1986 and 1992. This one is…better, much better. Described by Lamborghini’s head of design, Mitja Borkert, as the fastest SUV ever built though he might have to duke it out with the Alfa Stelvia crew for that designation (see Alfa’s entry in this guide) it marks 0 to 60 in 3.6 seconds and tops out at a stunning 190 miles per hour, courtesy of a bi turbo V8 that outputs 650 horsepower. The Urus’s dashboard architecture follows the “Y” theme inspired by iconic Lamborghini models, and the interior can be customized to bend towards elegant or sporty via a range of colors and materials, such as natural leather, wood finish, aluminum, and carbon fiber. Estimated to start at $195,000

A model Bayerische Motoren Werke (or Bavarian Motor Works) refers to as the “sports car of the future,” the i8 plug in hybrid is available in two variants the i8 Roadster and i8 Coupe the former’s 2019 version having just made its debut at the Los Angeles auto show in December, and which will be market ready in May. Both come equipped with BMW eDrive technology, enabling longer range and more time in pure electric mode. Dressed up in exclusive E Copper Metallic (with matching natural leather upholstery), the two seat Roadster is BMW’s first convertible plug in, and it looks the part, with signature scissor doors, a stream flow design, and cool as hell rear air ducts. Battery weight for both models is mitigated by an aluminum body and carbon fiber “passenger cell,” and propulsion is organized in a novel fashion: the electric motor drives the front wheels, the gasoline motor the rear. Early 0 to 60 times have been marked in the 4.2 second range, with a top speed of 155 mph. No official price at press time for the Roadster, but the i8 Coupe (seen here) starts at $143,400

Clues as to the market sweet spot of the new Velar were provided when early UK numbers indicated that no fewer than 20% of its sales were from Range Rover Evoque customers trading up, though the considerable majority were entirely new to the brand. And sold they did; Velar numbers were signicantly higher than forecast, including among tire kickers here in the U.S., so there seems to be a real hunger for a presentation that while about the same size as the more expensive Range Rover Sport is smoother and more unisex-sexy in body contour and more minimalist in approach overall, including a handsome but restrained interior in which physical controls have been winnowed down to a volume knob and a pair of rotary dials. A new Ingenium 2 liter turbo four cylinder (247 hp, 0 to 60 mph in 6.4 seconds) is standard, with a 2 liter turbo four cylinder diesel (180 hp) and a 3 liter supercharged V6 (380 hp) as options, the last jet packing to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds, and with a 5,512 pound pull capacity. In the increasingly diverse 911 line we have this thoroughly high end but not quite GT3 level lunacy GTS that to us, neatly occupies a space of at once relative affordability and super performance. A fresh design in many respects, 0 to 60 gures were unavailable at time of press (our best guesses is 3.5 seconds), but power comes from a 3 liter twin turbo six cylinder engine that produces 450 horsepower, hitched to a 7 speed manual (thank the gods!) transmission. The Stelvio is Italy’s highest mountain pass, and Highway 38, which crosses it over 15 miles in length and with more than 75 hairpin bends has iconic status. As part of its gradual reintroduction to the American marketplace, Turin, Italy based Alfa Romeo has rolled out something new in it’s more than 100 year history: a U.S. released SUV, its name, taken from that legendary pass. The Stelvio pro le honors the squat, swoopy lines of Alfa’s Giulia sedan, only with an extended hatch section, and at 15 feet in length and 5.5 feet high, sits more like a compact than a family truckster. By far the quickest of the three Stelvio models available is the Quadrifoglio, featuring a 505 hp twin turbo V6 hitched to an 8 speed automatic transmission. It’s described by Alfa as “the fastest SUV in the world,” and they have proof: the Quadrifoglio set the record for quickest lap by a sports utility on the Nürburgring Nordschleife track, with a time of just under eight minutes.
