At New York Laser Vision, Dr. Julia Giyaur and her staff of ophthalmic specialists are committed to bringing excellent eye care and innovative vision treatments to the residents of Kings County.

“I founded this practice as a comprehensive eye care center, offering non-invasive vision correction services for everyone from young children to adults,” noted the ophthalmologist. “We treat cataracts, glaucoma, and dry eye and prescribe glasses and contact lenses. Our goal is to feature a range of different specialties under one roof and be a one stop shop for all of your eye care needs.”

Dr. Giyaur, who has a special interest in cataract surgery, no flap and no cut laser vision correction, treatment of dry eye, and other eye surface problems, is a second generation eye surgeon following in the footsteps of her mother, who was a pediatric ophthalmologist in her native Russia.

“I was exposed to this profession when I was a child, inspired by mother to pursue an education in it,” she said.

After earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology and chemistry from New York University, she received her medical doctorate degree from SUNY Downstate Medical Center and completed her medical internship at NYU Downtown Hospital. She then entered residency training in ophthalmology at NYU/North Shore University Long Island Jewish Medical Center. In her last year of training, she was chosen to serve as a chief resident.

“I was immediately fascinated by microsurgery from the moment I witnessed it during my schooling.”

She gained experience working in various clinics and hospitals throughout New York City, including Maimonides Health Center, before opening her own practice 15 years ago.

“New York Laser Vision was initially born in Queens. We opened up a second location in Brooklyn when we realized how many of our patients were traveling to see us. I live in Brooklyn, so we expanded the office here and closed our location in Queens so that I could focus on one office.”

There are three other doctors in the New York Laser Vision practice. Dr. Vanessa Wang specializes in contact lenses, myopia control, and non-surgical vision correction, Dr. Rachel Mindin provides comprehensive eye care with a special interest in the treatment of dry eye disease, and Dr. Liaanora Katayeva also provides comprehensive eye care. In addition, the practice offers some cosmetic services.

“As an ophthalmologist, I do use Botox to treat certain eye problems, so it was just a natural extension to include cosmetic injections and procedures like blepharoplasty, better known as an eyelid lift,” Dr. Giyaur said.

Orthokeratology treatment, a method of preventing the progression of myopia or nearsightedness in children, has also become a point of focus.

“Myopia control prevents younger children and teens from progressive worsening of nearsightedness. In this age of technology, kids are now continuously in front a screen – computer, phone, iPad. Progressively, their numbers get worse and worse, and they are highly nearsighted by the time they are a young adult. But there is a procedure that can now be done to prevent this progression.”

Dry eye treatments, which Dr. Giyaur said are not particularly common in Brooklyn eye practices, are offered. And surgical vision correction options, which range from Lasik for younger patients to lens replacement surgery for those in their 70s and 80s, are also a specialty.

“Our practice features a specialist for each of these services. We are constantly adding and improving upon all of our divisions of eye care, too. When I opened 15 years ago, myopia control didn’t exist. It is very fulfilling to be able to offer all of these new and innovative services.”

New York Laser Vision is also a partner site for the SUNY School of Optometry, used to teach and train new doctors.

“We try to offer the most personalized care possible here at New York Laser Vision,” the doctor concluded. “If you’re looking for the perfect pair of lenses or glasses, we can help you with that. If you’re interested in learning more about Lasik surgery, we can teach you what you need to know. I think that is what really distinguishes our practice. We take the time to sit down and speak with each and every one of our patients, trying our best to understand their needs and provide them with all of the information they need on their vision correction. Some of my patients have been coming to me for the entire 15 years I have been in practice. They are like family. But that’s how we treat and care for everyone that walks into our office.”
